Carol Shea-Porter, our featured speaker at this Sunday’s Strafford County Democratic Party picnic sums it up succinctly: “In order to win, we need everyone on the field."

Strafford County Democrats and others will gather in the shade of the pavilion and fields at Millennium Park in Somersworth from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, for the party’s annual family picnic. The park is located at 99 Stackpole Rd., between High St. and Green.

Tickets for the event are $12.50 for adults and $25 for families. Sponsors at $50 for two persons will be acknowledged, as well as benefactors at $25 per person. Make your reservations now by calling Carole Appel, picnic committee chair, 749-7344.

Congressional candidate and former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter will head the list of speakers. County chair Joe Cicirelli says “This is a 'don't miss' event with candidates and Democrats from throughout Strafford County and statewide rallying in advance of the 2012 election. Enthusiasm and activity has never been greater and turnout is expected to be high. We invite our friends and neighbors from other counties to join the festivities.”

Democratic executive council, state senate, state representative, and county offices have all been invited and will be on hand to chat with constituents. The candidates for governor were also invited, and Dave Lang of the Professional Firefighters of New Hampshire will speak to the crowd on behalf of gubernatorial candidate Jackie Cilley, former senator Caroline McCarley will represent Maggie Hassan, and Bill Kennedy’s family members will be there.

In addition to the traditional fare of hamburgers, veggie burgers and veggie dogs, hot dogs, home-made salads and dessert favorites, this year’s picnic will feature gluten-free and vegan choices. A table full of great gifts will be raffled off.

The shady park has a large comfortable pavilion, appealing playground equipment, and grassy lawns. It is handicapped accessible.
